On 1 September 1796, Elizabeth Kingsbury of Thompson, Connecticut petitioned for divorce from Jonathan Kingsbury on grounds of desertion. She related that Jonathan deserted her three years previously and he was of parts unknown. She had maintained the duties of the marriage covenant. Allen Hancock of Oxford and Rebekah Shumway of Oxford provided statements in support of the petition. The petition was granted.[1]
