He was baptised William Uglow Whitford, illegitimate son of Catherine Whitford, on July 11, 1841 in Whitstone.

His mother Catherine Whitford did not marry his father, Nicholas Uglow until 6 years after William's birth at which time his name became "William Whitford Uglow"
