Letter from Fauquier
(Correspondence of the Alexandria Gazette.)
"... we have to record the death of Mrs. Hannah Fairfax Washington, relic (sic) of the late Mr. Perrin Washington, a government official. This lady died on the 21st inst., in her 85th year at the residence of her son, Mr. J. H. Washington, a merchant of the Plains. Mrs. Washington's life furnishes the connecting link between the present and past of respected Virginians rapidly passing away. Her personal appearance and features strikingly resembled those of the father of our country. She was the mother of the late Colonel Wm. Washington the first Professor of fine arts of the Virginia Military Institute -- who was an artist of superior talent and only second in merit to the famed Washington Alsten. Connected as Mrs. Washington was with the Fairfax, Whiting and Washington families her memory will be cherished by a numerous circle of relatives and friends. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and was buried at the private burial ground of the Carter family near Marshall, Rev. Jas. Grammar officiating."
[Note - "in the 85th year of her age" means she was 84 on her last birthday and was *in* her 85th year when she died.]
