Ellis County is located in north central Texas. Founded in 1849 and organized the next year, it is named for Richard Ellis, president of the convention that produced the Texas Declaration of Independence. One of the first settlers in the area was William R Howe, who settled late in 1843 near the site of present Forreston. The county seat is Waxahachie. Ellis County is included in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
