Biography

Homer Nicholas Abernathy was born August 22, 1906 in Guthrie, Logan County, OK. He was the 2nd child of the seven children of Louis Stacy Abernathy and Nettie Lavinia Leach Abernathy. Homers family moved several times as he was growing up, in 1910 they were living in Newkirk, Kay County, OK. By 1925 the family had moved to Arkansas City,KS.

In the mid 20's, Homer moved to Hinton, Plymouth County, IA. where he met Berdena Mae Sharr. Homer and Berdina married in January 1924 and they settled in Arkansas City. After 3 short weeks of marriage Berdena was killed in a collision between her car and a Sante Fe Railroad car. Berdena was born Oct 12, 1903 probably in Decatur County, IA. She died Feb 12, 1924 in Arkansas City, KS. She is buried in Riverview Cemetery Arkansas City, Cowley County, KS. Her memorial can be viewed at findagrave.com memorial #29508079.

Homer returned to Hinton, IA where he met Jeannette Evaline Early. Homer and Jeannette were married on July 20, 1926 in Newkirk, Kay County, OK. They made their home in Arkansas City, Cowley County, KS., and were the parents of of 3 children; Richard Darwin Abernathy, Donna June Abernathy Alford and Darlene Mae Abernathy Hopper.

Homer and Jeannette divorced about 1935. He then spent his time working and living between Ark City and CA. He eventually went to work for Smith & Moon located at at Strother Field, an Army Air Base located between Ark City and Winfield, KS. In about 1942 Homer moved to California full time, settling in Bellflower, CA and working as a self employed welder in Signal Hill, CA.

After his divorce from Jeannette, Homer met Leetoy Ellamae Denson Gillin. Homer and "Toy" lived together for nearly 30 years until his death, although it is believed they never married. Leetoy was born Feb 24, 1911 in MS. She died Jan 7, 1993 in Redding, Shasta County, CA. It is not know where she is buried

Homer died June 14, 1966 in Bellflower. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, CA. His memorial can be viewed at findagrave.com memorial #58098768.
