Biography

1776 Project
Benajah Ackley served with 6th Lincoln County Regiment, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Benajah Ackley was born about 1754 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.[1] His parents, Benajah Ackley and Laurania (Bill) Ackley, had married in Lebanon in 1747.[2] His father was a veteran of the Seven Years War, and seems to been granted lands in Nova Scotia. It's unclear, though, whether he died just before or just after the voyage. His widow Lurania received lands in Cornwallis, Kings, Nova Scotia in 1760-1761.[3] Benajah's mother Lurania remarried a Jonathan Woodruff in Cornwallis in 1764, and the family moved to Machias, Washington, Maine, by 1769. Benajah married Anna, daughter of Samuel Holmes prior to 1776 in Machias. [4] They had eleven or more children and have many descendants.[5]

Benajah served in the American Revolution at Machias as a private in 1777, in Capt. Joseph Sevey's Company in Col. Foster's 6th Lincoln County Regiment. He received 100 acres in Whiting in 1790.[6]

Benajah Ackley appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses as head of a household in Machias.[7] By 1810 and 1820, Benajah appears in Plantation 12 (now Whiting), Washington, Maine.[8] In 1816, he owned one of only 12 houses in Whiting.[9] He passed away in Whiting on May 16, 1829.[10] His son Samuel administrated his estate, which included land in Whiting, East Machias, and Machiasport.[11]

  3. Eaton, p. 74 lists a "Lawrence" Ackley appears alongside several members of the Bill family in a list of Cornwallis grantees. Since this Lawrence appears nowhere else in the records, it's presumably a mis-identification of the widow Lurania.
