He married Lydia Marlow on 4 Oct 1868 in Des Moines, Iowa.^[2]

Thomas was a Civil War veteran. He served as a Union Sergeant during the Civil War in Company E, 25th Iowa Infantry. ^[3][4]He was classified as "Army Invalid" in his pension payment records, indicating he suffered from chronic diarrhea.^[4]

Thomas was living in Burlington, Iowa when he enlisted in the Union Army at age 18 on 18 Jul 1862 as Second Sergeant. He was mustered in on 18 Jul 1862 and mustered out on 6 Jun 1865 in Washington, D.C.^[5]

Thomas was a member of Pasadena's John F. Godfrey Post of the G.A.R.

He passed away on 17 Mar 1924^[4] in Pasadena, California, United States and was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California. ^[1]
