Biography

Daniel Acworth was born in Chatham, Kent, England.

Birth

Daniel Acworth was born in 1679 at Chatham, Kent, England. He was baptised at Chatham^[1][2] on 29 August 1679. Daniel is the son of Edward Acworth and his wife Sarah.

Between 1679 and 1706 the family were living in Chatham close to the Dockyard. In January 1694/05 Daniel was Quarter Boy at the Dockyard. Quarter boys ran errands and did odd jobs for the skilled men. He was paid 8 pence per day.

Marriage

Daniel Acworth married Elizabeth Eastman at Chatham: St Mary the Virgin on 2 June 1703.

They had 4 children:

Robert (born 1702 and died May 1705),

Edward (born 1703 and died young),

Elizabeth (born 1705 and died young) and

Jacob (born 20 May 1706).

Their children were baptised at Chatham: St Mary the Virgin Church. This was the main church for the Chatham Dockyard and is on Dock Road just outside the gates to the dockyard.

On 10 August 1697 Daniel is Apprentice Shipwright to his father, Edward. Source is Extraordinary Paylists for Chatham Dockyard at TNA. He started on 16 pence per day.

On 2 March 1702 he was entered as a shipwright on the pay list at 25d per day. Old style date 1701/2. In the Quarter April to June he earned £12 10s. 6d.

Daniel is still in the Chatham Dockyard paylists for 1 April 1705 and in the quarter April to June, he earned £11 11s. 3d. He is earning good money.

After November 1708 Daniel is on the Chatham Dockyard pay list for Oct to Dec 1708. There is no note of his death or his pay being collected by his widow so he may have moved to another dockyard. He may have moved to Bermondsey where his son Jacob became a waterman??

Death

There is no record found of his death as yet but from pay records it was after 1708. The death could be that of Daniel Ashworth^[3] in 1713 - given the notorious spelling of the day!

An analysis of the Pay List data at Chatham Dockyards carried out by Sue Valliant shows that Daniel and his father Edward worked on the following ships:

1699 The Tilbury, a 4th Rate of 48 guns
1699 The Merlin, a sloop of 2 guns
1702 Nightingale, a 5th Rate of 24 guns
1704 Mary, a 3rd Rate of 64 guns
1705, Fowley, a 5th Rate of 32 guns
1707 Salisbury, a 4th Rate of 54 guns.
