Research Notes

There is uncertainty as to who this Elisha Adams is. The Henry Adams of Braintree genealogy suggests 3 possibilities:

  • Was he the son of Elisha 1666, { Edward. Henry} (Elisha Sr is currently not on wikitree)
  • Was he the same man who is identified here as Elisha or Eliashib Adams Jr, , Adams-4113?
  • Was he the same man who is identified here as Elisha or Eliashib Adams-11878, a son of Edward Jr {Edward, Henry)

Could these all be the same person? Further research required.

Elisha Adams was born on 9 May 1699 in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island. He was the son of Edward Adams and Elizabeth Walley. Elisha Adams was also known as Eliashib Adams. On 18 February 1729 in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, Elisha married Reliance Mayhew.

ELIASHIB ADAMS, the first of this name to reside on the island of Martha's Vineyard, was the son of Edward of Barnstable and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. Thomas Walley of the same town, and was b. May 1699. He came to C. about 1728, and is called a cordwainer. He m. RELIANCE MAYHEW 15 Feb. 1728-9; who was b. 1696 and d. 8 Jan. 1729- 30, in childbirth, her first and only child. "She was a pious prudent woman of blameless conversation," wrote Parson Homes. The date of his death is not known to the compiler, but he was living in 1768. The genealogy of the Adams Family has been published (1898), and reference to it may be made for particulars of his ancestry.

Recent investigation by the compiler in England prove that Henry Adams, the emigrant ancestor, was a native of the parish of Barton St. David, Co. Somerset, and son of John Adams. His wife was EDITH SQUIRE, daughter of Henry Squire of Charlton Mackrell. This was the Adams family from which Presidents John and John Quincy Adams, descended. His relationship to the Adams presidents is through their common descent from Henry Adams

There is no Elisha in the Joseph and Hannah Bass Adams family. The Henry Adams of Braintree genealogy identifies him as a son of Elisha. I will place him where he belongs.
