Biography

James Adams (1823-1869) was born about 1823 in Ireland. ^[1] He was the son of Henry Adams. ^[2]

He was a private in the British Army in the 57th Regiment of Foot and served in India at Fort St George in Madras. It was there on the 22nd March 1843 that he married Sarah Ann Crowe, then aged 19 years at St Mary's ^[2] and their eldest child would be born there the following year.

Within the next couple of years he was redeployed to Ireland where several other children were born. He was included in the Army 1851 worldwide index shown in Dublin, Ireland still in the 57th regiment of foot. ^[3]

He left the army before 1860 and travelled to Liverpool, Lancashire. His daughter Mary Jane was born there in Cunliffe Street and he was employed as a labourer. ^[4] They stayed at the address for the next few years with James taking a variety of jobs. The 1861 census showed, as well as his own family, a visitor and a boarder both called Adams born Ireland, possibly younger siblings or other relatives. ^[5]

He had another three children in the 1860s (not all survived). He himself died a few days after he accidentally fell into the River Mersey at George's Landing Stage when disembarking from the ferry following a day trip on Good Friday 1869. ^[6]

After an inquest, he was buried in Anfield Cemetery, Liverpool on the 2nd April 1869 in a public grave. ^[7]
