Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Samuel Adams is a part of US Black heritage.

Birth and Family

There is a question as to whether Samuel was born in Illinois or Virginia. Since he lived at a time when he couild have been enslaved, his birth place is not certain.

Samuel was born about 1843 in either Illinois, and his parents were born in Illinois according to the 1880 Census.[1] His death certificate states he was born in Virginia. See below.

Civil War Union Veteran

Samuel served as a private/cook in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1851-1865 in Company 1B in the Colorado Territory. [2]It is likely that it was during his period of service that Samuel first experienced life in New Mexico. Wikipedia mentions that some units from Colorado were engaged in movements in New Mexico. Research Note: one would need to order a copy of his service record to obtain further information of Samuel's Civil War experience and any further demographic data he may have provided.

Marriage and Family

On 8 January 1878, Samuel Adams married Timotea Chavez, she and her parents were born in New Mexico according to the 1880 Census. They were married in Pena Blanca, Sandoval, New Mexico, United States. [3]

By 1880 Samuel, age 37, and Timotea, age 20, lived in Galisteo, Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States. There are no children listed.[4]

According to Family Search, the couple had at least six children:

  1. Juan Elias Adams-1882, no sources
  2. Nestor King Chavez Adams, 26 February 1891[5]
  3. Polita Adams, 10 August 1894 [6]
  4. Gregorio Chavez Adams, christened in July 1896[7]
  5. Isobel Chavez Adams- (son) 6 July 1899 no source
  6. Cleotilde "Tillie" Chavez Adams 5 August 1902 no sources
  7. Irene Chavez Adams- no date, no source

Research Note: In 1910, Timotea's last name is translated from the Census record as Alamis; however, one could read the last name as Adams. Investigation is needed. It is probable that this is mistranslation of the Census document. The person who is most likely Samuel is identified as Simon. The five children listed appear to be among the children listed above. [8]

Death and Burial

Samuel died on 17 November 1927. Somehow he acquired 2nd and 3rd degree burns over his body. He died in the St. Vincent's sanitarium. The certificate states he was born in Virginia, was widowed (Timotea was living at this time) and 90 y.o. when he died. [9] His Find A Grave information states that he was born in 1843 in Illinois. He was a Union Veteran of the Civil War. He is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, USA [10]

Research Notes

  • Family Search ID: 9JZK-K41
  • The death certificate that matches this grave, states the person was born in Virginia. This is either an error or a different person.[11] In this case, it may be that this person is a different Sam Adams.? Or it may be the same person and there was misinformation on the 1880 Census? As this was a time of slavery, Samuel could have been an escaped enslaved person, and he muddled his demographic data to protect himself.
