Biography

The son of Francis Adams Sr and Maryette (Chace) Adams, Francis Adams was born in Chicago, Illinois^[1] in 1882, residing there with his family.^[2] Francis was graduated from Amherst College in 1904, and later received a law degree from Harvard University Law College in 1908.^[3] He applied for a passport in 1907.^[4] He was described, at the age of 24, as 5'10" tall with dark brown hair and brown eyes.

Francis married Florence Spears Bannard (1883-1973), the daughter of Henry Clay Bannard and Julia Florence Spears, marrying in Chicago on September 25, 1909,^[5] having one daughter together, Jane Bannard Adams (1914-1988).^[6] They made their home in 1910 in New Trier, Illinois,^[7] where Francis worked for the railroad as a lawyer.

Francis and Florence divorced and Francis remarried in 1925, marrying Emma Chapelle Noe (1885-1972), the daughter of Albert Davis Noe and Iantha Elizabeth Alice Carbon, marrying in Manhattan, New York on June 30, 1925.^[8] They made their home in Manhattan, residing in an apartment on East 49th Street, while Francis worked as a real estate broker.^[9] Emma, a presumed opera singer, did not list an occupation in 1930. He later joined the Manhattan law firm of Browne, Whellock, Harris and Vogt. Francis and his wife moved to Lousville, Kentucky, his wife's home, in 1942.^[3]

Francis Adams died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 66, passing away as he walked down the Ohio River levee at the foot of Fourth Street in Louisville, Kentucky. His body was removed quickly from the river and coast guardsmen and emergency police, reportedly, worked for an hour in an effort to revive him. The autopsy revealed that he had suffered a brain bleed, with no water found in his lungs, likely passing away before entering the water.^[3] His remains were cremated and buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.^[3]
