Biography

Mattie (Adcock) Cantrell was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Mattie Lee Adcock was born on August 25, 1906 in Tennessee, United States, daughter of William Riley Adcock (~1880–<1930) and Cynthia Effie Cantrell (1880–1924).

Mattie married Ernest P Cantrell (born on March 17, 1894 in DeKalb County; son of John Lafayette Cantrell Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Ferrell) Cantrell). Their daughter was Mary Frances Josephine Cantrell (1940–2008).[1]

In the 1910 census Mattie (age 3) was the daughter of Riley W Adcock in Civil District 15, Warren, Tennessee, United States.[2] Riley W Adcock 34, wife Cynthia Adcock 24, daughter Hazel Adcock 6, daughter Mattie Lee Adcock 3, daughter Jessie May Adcock 2.

In the 1920 census Mattie (age 14) was the daughter of Riley R Adcock in Civil District 15, Warren, Tennessee, United States.[3] Riley R Adcock 47, wife Cyntha Adcock 39, daughter Hezzell Adcock 17, daughter Mattie L Adcock 14, daughter Jessie M Adcock 12, daughter Vera Adcock 5, daughter Macon R Adcock 3, son Willie Adcock 0.

In the 1930 census Mattie (age 24) was the married daughter-in-law of J L Cantrell Sr. in District 25, DeKalb, Tennessee, United States.[4] J L Cantrell Sr. 64, wife Mary Cantrell 63, daughter-in-law Mattie Cantrell 24, grandchild Katie B Cantrell 3, grandchild Eugene Cantrell 2, grandchild James C Cantrell 1, grandchild Dorothy M Cantrell 7, grandchild Margaret L Cantrell 8, grandchild Nadine Barnes 14.

In the 1940 census Mattie (age 34) was the wife of Earnest Cantrell in Civil District 25, DeKalb, Tennessee, United States.[5] Earnest Cantrell 47, wife Mattie Cantrell 34, daughter Kattie B Cantrell 13, son Eugene Cantrell 12, son Carl Cantrell 11, son Lenard Cantrell 8, son Hoyt Cantrell 6, son Chalton Cantrell 3, daughter Agatha Cantrell 0, sister-in-law Vera Cantrell 25, niece Roberta Cantrell 7, niece Louise Cantrell 3, nephew Olene Cantrell 0.

In the 1950 census Mattie (age 45) was the wife of Earnest P Cantrell in DeKalb, Tennessee, United States.[6] son Joe C Cantrell 11 years, daughter Mary F Cantrell 9 years, daughter Gatha F Cantrell 8 years, daughter Macon Cantrell 7 years, Earnest P Cantrell 57 years, wife Mattie A Cantrell 45 years, daughter Katy B Cantrell 23 years, son Eugene Cantrell 22 years, son Carl Cantrell 19 years, son John L Cantrell 18 years, son Hoyte Cantrell 16 years.

Mattie died on September 12, 1979 in Smithville, DeKalb, Tennessee, aged 73. She was buried in Young Bend Cemetery, DeKalb County, Tennessee.[7][8]
