Rear-Admiral Edward Adeane CMG FRGS was born in 1836. He was the son of Member of Parliament Henry Adeane and Matilda Stanley.[1]
Edward married Edith, the daughter of the 14th Earl of Carnwarth.[1] They had one son, Henry.[2]
Edward held a Doctorate of Laws and served as Justice of the Peace for Middlesex. He had entered the Navy in 1850 and served as midshipman on HMS Imperieuse during the Baltic expeditions of 1854. Edward was Commander of HMS Galatea under the Duke of Edinburgh when he sailed around the world.[2] Edward served as commander of HMS Tenedos in the 1879 Zulu Wars. For his services in this campaign Edward was created a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.[2]
Edward commanded HMS Ajax from 1886.[1] He was appointed a Rear-Admiral in 1888, Vice Admiral in 1893 and Admiral in 1898.[2]
In 1890 Edward stated his address to be 28 Eaton Place, London.[1] After leaving the Navy, Edward became a member of Westminster Borough Council, Chairman of the Metropolitan Asylum Board, President of the Shipwrecked Mariners Society and Vice-President of the Marine Society.[2]
Edward passed away on 18 October 1902 and was buried in the churchyard of Babraham, Cambridgeshire.[2][3]
