Mary was a seamstress for the family of Potter Palmer in Chicago, a wealthy family there and would come home by train on weekends.

Mary's father served in the Civil War and was in Sherman's march to the sea. Bill Gray, son of George Gray, Son of Alton Gray has the Civil War sword.

Daughter Loretta Brennan worked all her life at the University of Notre Dame and was the secretary for the Dean of Students. She lived in the family home at 920 Notre Dame Avenue.
