James Adkins was born c. 1785 in Virginia, United States.
He married Nancy Agness Bishop (1795-c. 1870) c. 1808. She may have been the daughter of Hans Johannes Bischoff (1757-1853). The Bischoff family changed their name to Bishop in the United States. However, no evidence of her birth into this family was found even after an extensive search.
Some of the children who are connected to this profile belong to another James Adkins.
He and Nancy were both on the 1860 United Statess Federal Census on 20 July in District 4, Pike, Kentucky. He was not on the 1870 Census with his wife and son.
