On 26 July 1909 at Oxford he married Alice Elizabeth, daughter of Eli John Greenwood. They had two children: Walter William John (b. 25 Jan 1910) and Dorothy Mary Alice (b. 30 Jul 1912).

Severely wounded in the head during Battle of Hooge, 10 Aug 1915, he died at Calais on 13 Aug 1915. Buried at Calais Southern Cemetery.
