THIS IS HERE AS A PLACE HOLDER OBITUARY FOR HER HUSBAND

John Franklin McFarland, the descendant of a pioneer Cottage Grove family and a life long resident of the South Lane area, is dead at age 94. But for a man who enjoyed riding flumes and catching live wolves in his younger years, he was perhaps lucky to reach his 10th decade of life.

Born Sept. 14, 1875 on a farm west of Cottage Grove, Frank McFarland helped his father James and his brother Warren open the area's first butcher shop in 1882. Two years later he was in logging on Rat Creek.

Frank McFarland was the son of James and Sophronia Knox McFarland. His grandfather John Ward McFarland, settled on a donation land claim near Silk Creek in 1853.

Recalling the logging camp, Mr. McFarland once said, "Fred Russell owned it and we built flumes to send the logs down to the mill. Riding the flume was considered great sport, although I guess it was kind of dangerous."

Frank McFarland's first wife died in 1947 and he later married Lena Veatch, who survives him. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, Millard McFarland of Salem, a granddaughter and many other relatives. A son, Rex, preceded him in death in 1942.

During the past two decades the McFarland's were active in the formation of the Cottage Grove Historical Society and in the establishment of the Pioneer Museum.
