John Bernard Ahern was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on October 4, 1894. He was the son of Daniel Ahern and Julia Butler. He had at least four siblings.

John was a law student at Georgetown University in the District of Columbia prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, WWI.

He was an Ensign and a gunner for the United States Navy, World War I.

He went MIA in September 30, 1918 when the ship he was in, the American Steamer Ticonderoga had engine trouble. A torpedo from a German U-boat hit the steamship and it sunk.
