Biography

Salvatore Aiello, called Sam, is born 18 June 1896 in Palermo. His obituary calls him the son of Anna Inserra and Frank Aiello.[1] He is, in fact, the son of Salvatore Aiello and Antonina Greco. The latter names appear in Salvatore's marriage application with Katherine Paveso in April 1921 in Utica, New York. His marriage to Catherine Pavese on 1 June 1921 is recorded in Sam's obituary.

Sam immigrates to the United States as a child with his family, who settle in Utica, in Oneida County, New York.

In the 1910 federal census of Utica, NY, taken 22 April, Salvatore Aiello heads a household at 535 Bleecker St. He is 52 (b. 1858) and has been married for 34 years (m. 1876) to Antonina, who is 45 (b. 1865 so she married at age 11). They have had thirteen children, ten of them still living. The children at home in this census are Domenico, 18 (b. 1892), Giuseppe, 17 (b. 1893), Salvatore, 16 (b. 1893-4), and Isodoro, 8 months (b. Aug 1909). Other than Isodoro, born in New York, the family are all of Italian birth and immigrated in 1903. Salvatore, the elder, owns a grocery. Domenico is a laborer.[2]

A WWI draft registration appears to be a match for Sam:

Salvatore Aiello, age 21, born 13 September 1896 in Bagheria, Italy, living at 516 Albany, Utica, NY, registers for the draft for WWI. He is a driver for Frank Inserra Co. He supports his mother and brother. He is not married. On 5 June 1917, Salvatore is described as being of medium height and stout build with brown hair and eyes.[3]

The birth date given is not a match for other records for Salvatore/Sam. Salvatore's brother, Domenico, works for Frank Inserra as a macaroni maker, according to his WWI registration.

The grocery store of Salvatore Aiello, Sam's father, at the corner of Elizabeth and Albany Streets, is badly damaged by fire, an hour before the Family Liquor Store of Frank Spadafora, in the Cardamone Building at 515-519 Bleecker St., burns.[4]

In the 1920 federal census of Utica, NY, taken 13 June, Antonia Ayalo heads a household at 734 Jay St. She is 60 and a widow. She was born in Italy and immigrated in 1900. Also in her home are her two sons, Salvatore and Isadore. Salvatore is 23 (b. 1897) and divorced. He was born in Italy and immigrated in 1901. Isadore is 10 (b. 1910) and was born in New York. Salvatore is a general laborer.[5]

On 8 August 1920, Salvatore is driving a truck belonging to Frank Inserra when he strikes a pedestrian and continues driving for more than a mile before a witness alerts him to the accident.[6]

Salvatore Aiello, 734 Jay St., and Katherine Paveso, 757 Bleecker St., apply for a marriage license[7] on 27 April 1921. Salvatore, age 24 (b. 1896-7), manufacturer, born in Italy, son of Salvatore Aiello and Antonia Greco, marries Katherine Paveso, 21, seamer, born in the US, daughter of Frank Paveso and Antonette Manzi, who were both born in Italy. Both are residents of Utica.[8] Salvatore and Katherine marry on 1 June 1921.[1]

Sam and Katherine (her name is also spelled "Catherine") have two children, Salvatore, Jr. (c. 1924) and Ann (c. 1926).[1]

Louis Spadafora, the 23 year old son of Frank Spadafora, is killed in 1924.

By 1933, Salvatore, the son, who is called Sam, begins a career as a driver for Scheidelman Wholesale Grocers, Inc.[1]

Sam's brother, Dominick, is killed with their brother-in-law, Pietro Lima, in November 1934. The men are partners in a network of illicit alcohol stills.[9] Sam is a pallbearer at both funerals.[10]

In the 1940 federal census of Utica, NY, taken 8 April, Salvatore Aiello heads a household at 1314 Bleecker St. He owns his home, worth $2500. Salvatore is 44 (b. 1896) and his wife, Catherine, who answers the census, is 40 (b. 1900). Their children at home are Salvatore Jr., 16 (b. 1924), and Anne, 14 (b. 1926). Salvatore was born in Italy and the rest of his family were born in New York. They lived in the same place in 1935. Salvatore is a checker for a wholesale company.[11]

Salvatore Jr. serves in WWII as a Technician Fourth Grade in military intelligence assignments overseas.[12]

In 1961, Sam's youngest brother, Isadore, is arrested on a charge of buying and receiving stolen property.[13][14]

Catherine dies on 15 May 1987.[1]

Mr. Salvatore (Sam) Aiello, 93, of 1313 Bleecker St., dies 23 September 1988.[1]

At the time of his death, Sam's children are both married: Ann to Stanley Fernalld, and Salvatore to Vera Palmieri.[1]
