John Aikens was born on 31 May 1816 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of George Aikens (1786–1861) and Elizabeth Walker Aikens (1787–1853).

John Adams Aikens died 11 August 1888 in Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia and was buried at Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia.[10][11]

Census Records show that John Aikens was born in Pennsylvania. However, his death records states he was born in Virginia.
