Born on 9 Mar 1896 in Hull, Yorkshire. Son of George Frederick Ainley and Minnie née Mawer. Educated at South Myton School in Hull.
Joined the Army on 18 Aug 1912.
He was shot through the head during the Battle of Hill 60 near Ypres by a sniper on 1 May 1915. Unmarried. Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
