John was born 30 January 1844 at Cleator Moor, Cumberland.[1] He was the son of Thomas Ainsworth and Mary Laurie Stirling.[2][3]
John married Margaret Catherine Macredie on 5 November 1879 at Kensington, London.[4] They had five children, the eldest of which, Janet Mary, was born and died in 1880. Jean Barbara, born in 1883, married Algernon Skeffington in 1905 and became the Viscountess Massareene. Thomas, born in 1886, married twice, became the 2nd Baronet Ainsworth upon the death of his father in 1923. Margaret Louise, born 1887, also married twice. John Stirling, born 1889, never married, was killed in action 13 or 14 October 1914 at the Battle of Messines, France.
In 1881, John and Margaret were living in the household of Thomas ainsworth, John's father, at Cleator, Cumberland. John's occupation was listed as Justice of the Peace and Manufacturer employing 500 hands.[5]
In 1891, John, Margaret and children, Jean, Thomas, Margaret and John are living at Castlerigg, Cumberland. John's occupation is listed as Landed Proprietor Mine Owner.[6]
John was High Sheriff for Cumberland in 1891 and was later named Deputy Lieutenant for Cumberland and Argyllshire.
In 1901, John, Margaret and daughters, Jean and Margaret are living at Kensington, London. John' occupations are listed as Proprietor of Railway, Bank Director, and Lieutenant Colonel Volunteer.[7]
Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant J. S. Ainsworth of the 3rd (Cumberland) Volunteer Battalion, The Border Regiment retired 15 November 1902 and was granted the honorary rank of Colonel with permission to wear the uniform of the battalion in his retirement.[8]
In 1911, John, his wife, Margaret, and their daughter, Margaret, were living at St George Hanover Square, Westminster, London. John's occupation was listed as Member of Parliament for Argyll.[9]
Sir John was named 1st Baronet Ainsworth 10 April 1917.[10]
He passed away 24 May 1923 at home at Harecroft Hall, Gosforth, Cumberland.[11] His will was probated 18 December 1923.[12]
