Biography

Agnes Aitchison was born on 7 Apr 1764 at Sandhouse, Colmonell. Her parents were Alexander Aitchison and Janet McCreadie. She was baptised in Colmonell on 11 Apr 1764. ^[1]. Her name also appears spelled as 'Atchinson ' and 'Hutchison'.

Her first child, John Stewart Aitchison was born in Girvan in 1790, followed by Jean Aitchison in 1798/9.

By the time of the 1841 Census, Agnes was already 77 years of age although the Census estimated her age to be 75. She was living with her daughter Jean Aitchison and her family at Back Lane, Girvan - 13 people crowded into a small dwelling must have been cosy! ^[2]

There is no further information about Agnes. She does not appear on the 1851 Census, with her family or anyone else therefore it must be assumed she died at some point between the two Census. There is no family burial in either of the two burial grounds and given the family's status it is likely she was buried in one of the pauper graves in the Old Street Cemetery, Girvan. On Jean's death record she is described as an agricultural worker.
