"The Mancos Times-Tribune August 12, 1912 Ira S. Freeman, Ed. P. 4 (back page) Killed by Falling Tree A rather unusual accident happened out at the logging camp of the Montezuma saw mill last Friday when John A. Akins, an old gentleman who was working for the company, was killed by a falling tree. It seems that Mr. Akins, with others, was working on a railroad grade and had gone out into the brush to get some grade stakes near where some men were cutting logs. When the tree commenced to fall the old gentleman was standing away from where it was expected to fall but in falling it swerved from its natural course for some reason and one limb of the tree struck him on the head, fracturing the skull and killing him instantly. Mr. Akins had arrived only ten days before from Texas and a daughter and son-in-law was staying at the camp with him. Another daugheter in Texas was immediately notified and at her request the body was held until she and her husband could arive which they did on Monday. The funeral was held Tuesday and the body lain in its last resting place in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Deceased was 61 years and 8 months old. Tom Vaughan, Editor The Mancos Times-Tribune Serving the beautiful Mancos Valley since 1892"[1]
