Biography

Mary was born about 1846.

John C. Markley and Mary Ellen Nelson married in Mitchell County, Kansas ^[1]

In 1875, "J.C." and "M.E" Markley were living in Mitchell County, Kansas with seven children. ^[2]

In 1880, John and Mary E. Markley resided in Eureka, Kansas with children Peter (from a previous marriage of John's), Raymond, Hersey, Alice and Bertha.^[3]

In 1900, John C. and Mary E. Markley lived in South Hood River, Oregon with children Raymond, Hersey T., twins Orpha and Audrey and Gladys.^[4]

She passed away in 1929.^[5][6]

Research Notes

Mary's death certificate suggests her last name at birth was "Akers", which is supported by marriage and death records of several of her children. The reported marriage record for "Mary Ellen Nelson" and "John C. Markley" in Mitchell County, Kansas in 1872 is almost certainly the correct one, as the ages of both parties matches the census records cited above, and John and Mary lived in Mitchell County in the 1875 and 1880 census records. It is possible that Mary Ellen first married a "Nelson" prior to marrying John C. Markley, but supporting evidence has not been found.
