Louis Carmine Albano is born around 15 July 1918 at his parents’ home at 28 Union St in Springfield, the son of Antonio Albano and Pasqualina Botta. His father is a teamster.[1] He is named after his paternal grandfather, born Luigi, who is called Louis.
In the 1920 federal census of Springfield, MA, taken 17 January, Toni Albano heads a household at 28 Union St. He is 31, was born in Italy, immigrated in 1891, and became a naturalized citizen in 1910. He is a grocery owner. His wife and children appear on the next sheet of the census. Pasqualina, his wife, is 31, immigrated in 1891, and became naturalized in 1910. Their children at home are Francis, three years and one month old (b. Dec 1916), erroneously listed as a son, and Louis, one year and five months old (b. Aug 1918).[2]
Louis' aunt Pasqualina Albano and her first husband, Carlo Siniscalchi, become bootleggers at the onset of Prohibition. He is killed in 1921. Pasqualina remarries, to Antonio Miranda, and continues her illegal operations. Antonio dies in 1930.
In the 1930 federal census, taken 9 April, Anthony Albano, 41 (b. 1889), heads a household on Wilcox St in Springfield, MA, with his wife, Pasqualina, 42 (b. 1888), and children Frances, 13 (b. 1917), Louis, 11 (b. 1919), and Clementina, 5 (b. 1925). Anthony owns his home, worth $9,000. Anthony and Pasqualina married when they were both 25 years old (about 1914). They were both born in Italy, and immigrated in 1890. They are naturalized citizens. Their children were born in Massachusetts. Anthony is the proprietor of a grocery store.[3]
Louis' aunt Pasqualina, the "Bootlegger Queen" of Little Italy, is killed in 1932. Her children from her first marriage go to live with another of Louis' aunts, Josephine.
In the 1940 federal census, taken 29 April, Anthony Albano, 51 (b. 1889), heads a household on Wilcox St in Springfield, MA, with his wife, Pasqualina, 51 (b. 1889), their children Frances R., 22 (b. 1918), Lewis C., 21 (b. 1919), Clementine, 15 (b. 1925), and a lodger, Carlo Siniscalchi, 26 (b. 1914). Carlo is Louis' cousin, the orphan of his aunt Pasqualina, and her first husband.
Anthony owns his home, worth $1600. He owns a retail grocery store, where his wife also works as a helper. Frances is doing secretarial office work. Louis is a new worker. Tina does not work. Carlo operates a gas station.[4] Felix's oldest son, Salvatore, is Louis Albano's future brother-in-law.
Louis works in his father's grocery store, Albano's Market, on Wilcox Street.[5] The store opens in 1942.[6]
In 1945, Louis marries Elsie Rosati. They have three children: Patricia, Tina, and Anthony.[5]
His father dies in 1953.[7]
His mother dies in 1973.[8]
Elsie dies in 2001.[5]
In 2003, Louis takes a trip to his parents' hometown of "Bragliano," Italy, with his best friend and cousin, Felix Santaniello, according to his obituary.[5] Felix and Louis are cousins on Felix's mother's side. Their grandfather was born in Bracigliano. Felix's father is from Quindici.
Louis dies on 4 March 2009 at age 90 in the Jewish Nursing Home in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.[5] He previously lived in Westerly, RI.[9]
