Biography

Married Graciana Irurita sister of his two sisters husbands Sancho Irurita and Martin Irurita. He was son of Sancho Martin Leones and Francisca de Tahuste. According to Los Irurita both he and his wife were deceased by 27 March 1579 when his children inventoried and divided his estate. They are given as Adrian and Martin Leones regidors of Lorca, a daughter who was still a minor married to Juan Navarro de Guevara, Catalina Alonso married to regidor and Captain Alonso del Castillo (this couple have a son Alonso born in Lorca in 1567) and the youngest Francisca Tahuste living in Cartagena and married to Diego Bienvengud Regidor of that town. There has been some doubt as to Juan's parentage but from Los Irurita it is clear that Francisca Tahuste was the wife of Sancho Martin and from the marriage entry of Juan's daughter of the same name to Diego Bienvengud where it declares the marriage to be between parties related in the 3rd degree, she and her husband had to be double first cousins which confirms Juan's parentage as given here. Also the fact of her name is a strong indicator as to her father's parentage. His actual date of death is stated in Conceil de Lorca. Although Morote in Blasones de Lorca and many genealogies following him gives Juan's mother as Magdalena Martinez this has to be wrong as does the greater part of the earlier genealogy of this family claiming decent from Martin Gil which is highly suspicious given that that gentleman is known to have died without surviving heirs of his body as referenced in the litigation over his estate.
