Early Life

Lydia was born 17 Nov 1874 in Switzerland. She was baptized on 6 Dec 1874 in Sankt Gallen, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland.[1][2] She was the daughter of John Alder and Anna Zellweger. She arrived to New York City, New York from Switzerland via Hamburg and Havre on the S.S. Holsatia with her parents when she was just 4 months old on 24 Mar 1875. They were listed as "betweeen deck passengers"[3] Her parents settled in Virginia, Cass, Illinois where her father was a farmer.[4]

Family

On October 18, 1895, she married Charles "Karl" Ferdinand Kroetsching in Fairbury, Jefferson, Nebraska.[5]

They had ten children:

  • Harvey Chester Kroetsching[6]
  • Russel Monroe Kroetsching
  • Willie Gustave Kroetsching
  • Ivy Irene (Kroetsching) Zuehlsdorf
  • Clyde Elton Kroetsching
  • Francis Vilma Kroetsching
  • Gilbert Willis Kroetsching[7]
  • Dorothy Arline (Kroetsching) Nelson
  • Lester Allen Kroetsching

In 1900, she was listed in the census twice. Once with her husband Charles Kroetsching and children, Oscar and Harvey on June 2, 1900 in Richland Precinct, Jefferson, Nebraska, United States[8] and again in her parents home on June 6, 1900 in Fairbury Precinct, Jefferson, Nebraska, United States, and noted as married with two children but they were not listed as living in the household. [9]

In 1910, she was enumerated at the age of 35 along with her husband Charles (41) in Cub Creek, Jefferson, Nebraska with children Oscar Charles (13), Harvey Chester (11), Russell Monroe (7), Irene Ivy (4), Clyde Alton (2), and Frances Vilma Kroetsching (1). Lydia's brother Ruben (18)was listed as their servant.[10]

In 1920, she was listed at the age of 45 with her husband (50) still living in Cub Creek, Jefferson, Nebraska. They were listed with children, Oscar (23), Harvey (20), Russell (17), Ivy (13), Clyde (12), Frances (10), Gilbert (9), Dortha (7), and Lester (5) [11]

In 1930, she was enumerated at the age of 55 living at 57 Boeke Ave, Sharon Springs, Wallace, Kansas with her husband (61) and children Oscar (34), Clyde (22), Frances (21), Gilbert (19), Lester (17), and Dorothy (16).[12]

In 1936, she was mentioned in the obituary of her sister Emma Alder Rapp.[13]

In 1940, she was listed at the age of 65 in Weskan Township, Wallace, Kansas with her husband (71) and children Oscar (43), Clyde (33), and a granddaughter (private). All men were listed as farmers.[14]

Lydia passed away 28 November 1968. She was buried at the Sharon Springs Cemetery in Sharon Springs, Wallace, Kansas. [15][16][17]
