John Arnold Aldous was born or baptised on the 23rd of August, 1796, at Stradbroke, Suffolk, England.

He was an apprentice in engineering pattern making in about 1810, aged 14. In his life his occupations included: CARPENTER, ENGINEERING PATTERN MAKER, IRON MOULDER, MECHANIC AND BLACKSMITH. He was a very practical man and able to turn his hand to any trade, very talented.

John married Eliza Louisa LOCKWOOD at Norwich, Norfolk, England, on the 17th of December, 1820. He was 24 years of age.

In 1841 he was living in Rose Lane, in the City of Norwich, and working as a carpenter. [1]

His wife Eliza died in 1845, aged 49.

John decided to bring his family to Australia, and on the 12th of September, 1848, he departed Plymouth in the ship 'Walmer Castle.' He could read and write, and listed his religion as Independent. On board were John Arnold Aldous & his children Isaiah, Jonathon, Esther, Rachel, Charles (wheelwright), Edward and Amelia - Eliza B & Ellen B Aldous remaining in Norfolk. The ships records indicate that John had a cousin named Thomas Bardwell living in or near Sydney at the time of his arrival in Australia.[2] The arrived in Sydney on the 30th of December, 1848.[3][4]

Within months of arriving in Sydney, John had settled in the Shoalhaven where he initially worked as an engineer on the Coolangatta Estate.[5]

He died at the home of his daughter Rachel Pepper at Worrigee, NSW (near Nowra) on the 18th of June, 1883, aged 86. Informant: Arthur B. Elyard, Rachel & John's son-in-law who was also the undertaker (DIED WITHOUT A WILL).
