Biography

David Aldrich was born in Providence, Rhode Island.[1]

David married Alice Grover. They had several children, and lived for a time in Granville, Washington County, New York before relocating to Augusta, Grenville, Upper Canada.

David and Alice moved to Mexico, Oswego, New York about 1818. David was enumerated there in 1820.[2] His household consisted of himself (over 45), 1 female (likely Alice over 45) and 1 male (age 16-18). David lived nearby his son, John Aldrich; his daughters, Sally (wife of Gad Morton) and Eunice (wife of John Morton). David's son, David Jr., also lived in Mexico at this time.

Grips Historical Souvenir mentions a fire that occurred at the residence of David Aldrich in 1821. This was a home that David was renting in the village of Mexico at the time.[3] It is quite likely that it was David Sr. (rather than David Jr.) who then bought property in Mexico from William and Mary Ann Fitch in 1824. David and Alice spent their remaining years in Mexico, Oswego, New York. The last reference to them in Mexico took place in 1830 when they sold land in Mexico to Joseph Wood. Alice's name was spelled "Ellice on the deed.[4] David was not enumerated as head of household in Mexico, New York in 1830. It is likely that he and Alice died in the early 1830s. His final resting place is unknown.

Research Notes

Although it is not known definitively, David is often presumed to be the son of Jonathan Aldrich and Abigail Walker, born 9 Jul 1736 in Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island. A transcription of the birth records of Jonathan and Abigail's children identifies their child, Daniel Aldrich, as having been born on 9 Jul 1736.[5] Another possibility exists in that David, may have been the son of Jonathan Aldrich and his second wife, Eunice Peck, who were married on 23 Jun 1743 in Providence, Rhode Island. Naming patterns would support this pairing as well as the time frame in which he and Alice began having children.
