Biography

William was the son of Walter Alexander and Helen Carter. His birth was registered in the Malton district of Yorkshire in the 3rd quarter of 1873.[1]

The 1881 census lists William at Slingsby, Yorkshire, in his parents' household, with his birthplace as Slingsby.[2] So does the 1891 census, with his age as 17.[3]

On 29 June 1897 William married Evelyn Gertrude Kerry Burcher, 23, daughter of Albert Edward Burcher, at Slingsby, Yorkshire.[4]

The 1901 census lists William at Long Dutton, Surrey, age 27, born Slingsby (mis-transcribed as Slingsby on Familysearch as at 25 May 2022), mining engineer. Wife: Evelyn G C, 26, born Bebbington, Cheshire. Son: Gerald E C, 2, born Long Diutton.[5]

By 1911 he had emigrated to the Waitomo district of North Island, New Zealand, where he farmed. During World War One he served on the Western front with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He passed away in 1949.

William died on 11 February 1949 and was buried on 14 February at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand. His burial record records his last name as Cayley-Alexander (hyphenated) and describes him as a retired farmer.[6][7]
