Biography

Eliza Jane (or Janet) Alexander is listed with her widowed mother and siblings in the 1861 and 1871 Toronto census and again in an 1872 legal notice in the Ontario Gazette naming her among the children of Robert and Rebecca Alexander. Peg Patton (her great niece) gave her ful/l name as Elizabeth Janet Alexander.

Birth and death dates listed on headstone in Riverside Cemetery, Co. Obit in Rocky Mtn News (March 23, 1882 p.8) - died at home 288 Welton, Denver on March 22, 1882 aged 33 yrs.

Records show that she came to America in 1873 and was probably married at the time. The couple settled in Albany, NY where Eliza's older sister was then living. She and her husband Arthur Bicknell are listed in the 1880 Albany, NY census, along with their children: Ralph-4 and Agnes-2. Eliza was 29, Arthur, a barber-30. In the 1881 Albany City Directory, Arthur Bicknell is listed as a hairdresser.

While there is no record of when the family moved to Denver, it appears they followed Eliza's brothers (John and Frank) to Denver in late 1881 moving next door to John Alexander as listed in the 1882 Denver City Directory. Unfortunately, on 22 March 1882, Arthur died at the young age of 32, leaving Eliza a widow with 2 young children.

Eliza had to move with her children after Arthur's death and by 1885 was living with her brother John's family. Eliza never remarried and by 1900, she was living with her married daughter and son-in-law, George McCormick who worked for the Denver Post.

Eliza died at the age of 56 on 3 June 1909 and was buried next to her husband in the Riverside Cemetery. Her daughter and 2 sons in law are also buried in the same plot while her brother John and some members of his family are nearby.
