Alexandra Friederike Wilhelmine von Holstein-Gottorp, Duchess of Oldenburg was born on 2 June 1838 [21 May 1838 O.S.] at St. Petersburg, Russia.
She was the daughter of Constantine Friedrich Peter von Holstein-Gottorp, Duke of Oldenburg, and Therese, Princess of Nassau-Weilburg.
Alexandra married Nikolai Nikolaievich Romanov, Grand Duke of Russia, son of Nikolai I, Tsar of Russia, and Princess Friederike Luise Charlotte Wilhelmine of Prussia, on 5 February 1856 [25 Jan 1856 O.S.] at St. Petersburg, Russia.
From 5 February 1856, her married name became Romanov, but her title remained Duchess of Oldenburg.
Her husband was the commander of the Russian army during the 1877 to 1878 Russo-Turkish war.
The children of Duchess Alexandra and Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich Romanov were: Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich the Younger, and Grand Duke Petr Nikolaievich Romanov,
Alexandra died on 25 April 1900, age 61, at Kiev, Ukraine.
In 1914, Tsar Nicholas II appointed Alexandra's son, Nikolai NIkolaievich the Younger, to be commander in chief of the entire Russian army.
Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich played a key role in some of the opening battles of World War I.
