Biography

6 Feb. 1868 Greene County, Tennessee Marriage to Elizabeth Martha Johnston. D/O James Jules Johnston and Mary J Maloy.

William Crawford Allen entered the Civil War in 1861 as a Corporal: 5th Regiment Calvary Tennessee. McKenzie's as a Corporal. It wasn't long until he was with John Hunt Morgan as a Captain. John Morgan hand picked all his men. They were known as John Hunt Morgan's Raiders. William C. Allen and Dudley Thomas Moore were together fighting with Morgan, all of Morgan's men loved Morgan. He was highly respected. in 1917 William C. Allen and Dudley T. Moore were commemorated for their service at Buffington Island, Ohio on the 19th day of July 1863. On the Arkansas Web site there is a picture of William C. Allen and Marth E Johnston Allen Gravestone with a message under it that says that William used to sit around with the guys telling them of what he had survived during the four years of the Civil War. (I am trying to get a copy of this newspaper picture and article from Arkansas historical society.) You can read about the Battle of Buffington Island Ohio and on John H. Morgan on line. William Crawford Allen grew up in Greenville, Greene County, Tennessee. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried to Joseph B Walker. The Buffington Island battle was also known as the St. Georges Creek Skirmish. It took place in Meigs County, Ohio and Jackson County, West Virginia on July 19, 1863. It was the longest battle of the Civil War in Ohio. William became a prisoner of war and was put on one of the Islands, Dudley was not caught and with the aide of Morgan's sister he helped William escape, and from there they helped Morgan escape. This is not written to my knowledge in the history books, this story is passed on by my grandmother, to my mother and from my mother to us children.

News Article

Capt. W.C. Allen of Cane Hill is shaking hands with friends in the city. Captain Allen is one of the few survivors of that Spartan band that with John Morgan “crowded the road to death as to a festival” in the fearful struggle from 1861 to 1865. Captain Allen relates many incidents of hair breadth escapes and daring deeds done by Morgan and his heroes during the war, especially the capture of Cynthiana, Kentucky. [1]
