Note: Paulina Allen Wilson's birthdate of 1817 is theoretical, based on her age as cited in the 1860 and 1900 censuses. However, other possibilities are 1820 (based on her age of 30 in the 1850 census), and 1802 (based on her age of 98 cited in the 1900 application to the DAR.
Paulina Allen was a daughter of John Allen and Mary "Mollie" Turner. She resided with them at the time of the 1850 census for Yancey County, NC, when her age was given as 30, at dwelling #982. At #983, Robert S. Allen, age 24, resided with wife Elizabeth M. and two small children. Other families nearby were Rays, Englands, McIntoshes, Banks, and Austens. Mitchell A. Wilson and wife Lucy were at #989, with two young children.
She married William Wilson after the death of his first wife Sarah. The date of the marriage has not been found, but was before the date of the U. S. Federal Census for 1860, when they were living in the Bald Creek postal area of Yancey County. Paulina was age 43, and residing with them was William Wilson's unmarried daughter, Jane, age 45.
In 1870, the same three were at Bald Creek in the Caney River district of Yancey County. William was 83, "Perlina" was 52 ("keeping house") , and Jane Wilson was 56 ("at home").
William died in 1871 or 1872. His Last Will (see manuscript image and partial transcript image) included this kernel: "I give and devise to my beloved wife Polina (during her [“widow years”?]) and daughter Jane all my [ . . . ] on parcel of land lying and being on Bald Mountain Creek where I now live . . . ."
When the census for 1880 was taken on 15 June, Paulina and Jane resided in the household of Jane's niece, (daughter of deceased sister Rachel Wilson Seagle) Amanda Seagle Hampton, her husband Milton, and their five children, still in Caney River. Paulina, widowed, was identified as "grandmother" and Jane was identified as "aunt".
When the census for 1900 was taken on 15 June, Paulina ("Polina") Wilson, age 83 ( born "Apr 1817") was living alone in the Price's Creek township of Yancey County. Her occupation was listed as farmer. It was recorded that she could read but could not write. Her marital status was indicated as single by 'S'.
According to a report of the Daughters of the American Revolution, noting her admission, she died on 20 December 1900.
