Biography

Sylvester Alpaugh was born on 23 January 1826, according to his gravestone and burial memorial. His birth year estimate on the 1870 US Census was 1840 and on the 1880 US Census it was 1832. Both census sources agree that his birth place was New York. He was the son of Phillip Alpaugh (??-1874) and Evaline (maiden name unknown) (??-1880). His known siblings were John 1825, William 1830, James Leander 1834 and Evaliza 1841.

Residence in 1850 was in Wheatland, Hillsdale County, Michigan.^[1] Sylvester 22 was residing in the household of Levi Treadwell. Three houses away are a brother, John 25, and wife Jane 26, Alpaugh and two houses beyond were his parents, Phillip 49, Evaline 49 with children; William 20, James 17, Cornelius 14 and Evaliza 9.

A family story tells that Sylvester and his brother, James Leander, sailed to Panama, crossed by land to the Pacific Ocean and sailed again to California. Some time after arriving in California, the brothers separated and remained out of contact.

He married Nancy Ann Hawkins about 1864, probably in Shasta county, California. She was the daughter of Benjamin Bowman Hawkins (1813-1885) of Guernsey county, Ohio, and Elizabeth Ann Walker (1821-1906) of Coshocton county, Ohio.

In 1870, Sylvester was living in Shasta county with his wife, Nancy, his son, Eugene, and daughter, Eva. He was farming and they are living next door to his wife's parents, Benjamin and Elizabeth Walker Hawkins.^[2]

His parents both died in Hillsdale County, Michigan.

Following Eugene 1864 and Eva 1867, they had six more children; Frank 1870, Clara 1874, Len 1875, Lillian May 1879, Pearl Lee 1883 and Sylvester Wesley 1884.

He was working as a farmer in Shasta county in 1880 with six children at home.^[3]

Sylvester died on 31 December 1897, according to his gravestone and burial memorial, which are found in the Millville Masonic Cemetery in Shasta county, California.^[4][5]
