(1941). R.A.N.V.R. OFFICER DECORATED. Action Against U-Boats. MELBOURNE, Monday.-The Minister for the Navy, Mr. Hughes, announced to-day that the King has approved the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Osmond Howard Alsop, R.A.N.V.R., of Sydney, for skill and devotion to duty in action against enemy submarines . . .
Lieutenant Alsop is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Alsop, of 10 Wallaroy Crescent, Double Bay. He is 26. He was a keen yachtsman and before the war joined the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve, and began training in the Anti-Submarine School. He was called up in November, 1939. Later, when a call was made for volunteers for the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Alsop offered his services, and left Australia early in 1940. He was promoted to lieutenant In January last.
While in England he married Miss Mavis Goslett, of Pinner, Middlesex. Lieutenant Alsop was educated at The Armidale School. He served articles with the firm of Yarwood, Vane and Co., chartered accountants, Sydney. Just before joining the Navy, he had accepted an appointment with Woolworths, Ltd.
