Son of German immigrant John Althoff and Mary Catherine Weibel Althoff, Joseph Althoff was a prosperous coach-builder who lived on Baltimore Street in Hanover, York Co., Pennsylvania from at least 1840 until his death. He served as chief burgess of Hanover in 1853. He was married twice: in 1835 to Susanna Grumbine, ten years his elder, and after her death, in 1869 to Elizabeth Mary Hemler.[2]
With his first wife, he had six children: David, William, Catherine, Henry, Josephine, and Lewis.
With his second wife, he had seven more children: Augustus, Mark, Joseph, Frances, Mary, Estella, and Fanny.
According to the York County Register of Deaths, he died of old age, and was buried at "St. Josephs."
