Biography

Dalton Humphrey Alward was born on 1 Feb 1899 in Lower Ridge, Havelock, Kings, New Brunswick, Canada, son of Stillman Humphrey Alward (1866–1941) and Iomena Keith (1870–1929).[1]

In 1901, Dalton (2) was living in household of Minnie Alward (30) in Kings, New Brunswick with his father, Minnie (30); and his siblings, Charlie (11), Addie P (7), and Winslow H (5). [1]

In 1911, Dalton (12) was living in Kings-Albert Sub-Districts 1-42 with Charles H Alward (undefined), Minnie Alward (undefined), Addie Alward (undefined), Dalton Alward (undefined), Winslow Alward (undefined), and Adelaid ?Ugh?T?R (undefined). [2]

Dalton died on 9 Jul 1917 in Passendale, West Flanders, Belgium, aged 18.

2023 "LEST WE FORGET" PROJECT

  1. 33 of 100: Private Dalton Humphrey Alward was from Havelock, Kings County, the son of Stillman and Iomena Alward. He was working in Havelock as a labourer when he enlisted in March 1916 in the 115th Battalion.

The Battalion arrived in England on 31 July 1916. He was eventually transferred into the 26th NB Battalion on 26 May 1917. Dalton fought in several battles - Vimy Ridge, Arleux, Scarpe, Hill 70, and Ypres. At the second battle of Passchendaele he was listed as missing in action, later confirmed killed on 16 November 1917. Dalton is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Belgium. The 2023 'Lest We Forget' postings mark the 100-day countdown leading to Remembrance Day on 11 November. This years digital project recognizes New Brunswick Veterans and Service persons of the Regular and Primary Reserve Forces who died In-Action or On-Service during the Boer War, FWW, SWW, the Korean War or on UN/NATO missions.
