Biography

Willie was born on 24 June 1875 at Bark Huts, Liverpool Road. [1] Willie married Violet Louisa Winstanley (1875–1948), daughter of an engineer James M Winstanley and Mary Ann Atkins (d1925), in the Church of St Stephen, Newtown, on 14 May 1898.[2] The couple had ten children—Mildred Irene Winstanley (aka Mildred Doris, Millie, 1895–1975) [3], William Thomas (Wick, 1898–1955), Alice Frederica (1899–1975), Walter Leslie Gunn (1902–1989), Harry Alexander (1905–1971), Mona Harriett (1909–1959), Julia Jean (Jean, 1910–2003)), Elsie Veronica (1913–1916) who died in infancy, Phyllis Joan (1915–) and Chance Hope (1917–1992).

At the time of his marriage Willie lived in Strathfield and was working as a carter. Willie and Violet lived in a variety of locations around Strathfield until 1923 when they moved into ‘Aspatria’, a brick cottage at 2 The Crescent Homebush, where they would remain for the rest of their lives. Willie worked as a labourer throughout his life. He died following a motor vehicle accident in Epping on 6 October 1952. [4] Violet and Willie are buried Rookwood Cemetery.[5]
