My father, Frank Small, told me that Jacob's family was prosperous and that his future wife was scandalously a maid in his mother's household. My Dad told me that they were somehow involved in the sugar beet business and that business deals were confirmed on the shake of a hand.
I have a letter by Jacob, written in German, to his parents while on a steamer named the Cortez, headed to California during the California Gold Rush, to "make my fortune". I don't believe that he did.
My father also remembered his sea chest, with the interior papered with pages from ladies' underwear catalogues.
