DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I've dived in pretty deep to this line, it looks very likely his father is James Anderson. There is a secondary source that indicates his current parentage, but the Primary sources seem in contradiction. They are also in contradiction to the Rev James Anderson father hypothesis, which is also found in a secondary source. To summarize:

This profile's children are well identified. They were involved in deed records that indicate their grandfather Anderson in Augusta VA was named James and owned land on Long Glade. There appears to be only one James Anderson on Long Glade. He wasn't Rev James Anderson. He could be an uncle to the current father of this profile, but is more likely related to an Isaac Anderson who was also an early resident in Augusta VA. This John Anderson's (i.e. this profiles') twins Isaac and Jacob seem to be named after this line. There is a lot of confusion regarding this particular Isaac Anderson. I think it most likely he was a brother to the father of this profile James Anderson. I found his profile abandoned and adopted it and have had help in researching this from another researcher who provided the information regarding these Madison land deeds, which seem to be very informative. I am not a direct descendant of this person, and would be happy to let anyone else take this profile over who would like to.

I am hoping to perhaps remove the edits placed on this profile by someone earlier this year that are in reference to Rev James Anderson. They do not seem to apply and are not fitting in this person's biography. There is very interesting biographical information about this individual that appears in the Maxwell book, his early residence in Kentucky is quite fascinating. I think it might be nice to replace the weird Rev James Anderson stuff with some of that. I don't want to do any of this without permission from PM though...?

There was a comment recently posted that has very good documentation for who this John descends from, and is worth exploring:

“ John Anderson b ca 1725 d 1796 Madison Co KY m in Augusta Co VA abt 1752 Ann Erwin. named in her father Matthew Erwin's will 10 Aug 1762 • Augusta, Virginia, USA Will dated 19 Apr 1755 Probated 10 Aug 1762

This John was the son of James Anderson who died and left a will in 1778 Augusta Co VA Madison Co KY Deed Bk D, page 712-714, 1798 Madison Co KY Deed Bk H, pg 167-168, 1811 The first document was a division of property among heirs in 1798, 3 years after the death of their father. It names all of heirs and children of John Anderson b.ca.1725 - d.1796 KY.

The second document, involving only some of the children gives a power of Attorney to Chapman Johnson of Augusta Co VA, to recover and sell for them 200 acres which had belonged to their Grandfather, James Anderson - this relationship explicitely stated in the document.”

Note: this is not Rev James Armstrong. The whole comment is on the page of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Anderson-40365#

I think on Wikitree this is the James Anderson referred to, and I think in Chalkley this is reference to his will:

Page 72: 19th-January, 1776. James Anderson’s will—To wife, Jean; to son, John, 5 shillings; to son, George, 5 shillings; to son, James, 5 shillings; to daughter, Agnis, 5 shillings; to daughter, Jane, 5 shillings; to son, Samuel, whole estate; to son Samuel’s son, James, 200 acres, infant. Executors, George Moffett and John Young. Teste: John Blair, Isaac Carson, Peter Challe. Proved, 15th June, 1779, by Blair and Carson. Executors refused, administration granted Samuel.

I have been reviewing that Maxwell book and find it confusing. I jumped the gun for sure. I would like to see the report of the granddaughter, Martha Anderson Baugh as I was beginning to be skeptical that she gave Rev James as her great great grandfather. Thank you! I looked for the Deed Books on familysearch and those I could not find. It is very clear his father was a James but not Rev James. Good catch

I think DOB should be 1740 and place Augusta VA for this John, if this is the John who was baptized by John Craig as suggested in the text. Note: his current father and uncles are all thought to be the Andersons who appear in the record of baptisms by John Craig 1740-1749 in Augusta VA. Although he could have been baptized well after his birth, PA is state of immigration for this family.

I think he should be individual no. 11 on this version https://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/va/trees/augusta.html There is a note that he is thought to have died young and wasn't mentioned in the will.

In terms of the secondary source (Maxwell History and Genealogy) that lists him as son of Rev James Anderson, it indicates his sister Susanna (Anderson) Woods also moved to Madison KY (John's POD and that they called each other "cousins." Perhaps they were. This would imply a relationship between Rev James Anderson and this family further back.

Thank you for the rootsweb link! It's possible. But then he would have only been 14 when he got married in about 1754 and 15 when daughter Margaret was born in 1755. I've seen his birth date published elsewhere as 1737, and that date or even earlier seems more likely. His father John Sr and wife emigrated from Northern Ireland but settled in Pennsylvania for a while and a few of his children were already born when he removed to Virginia in 1738. I wonder if all of the children baptised by John Craig were newborn infants. I will try to find and add other sources I had showing his birth date as 1737.

Just realized this close connection between the Andersons and Crawfords. Also, Rev James' 2nd spouse was Rebecca Crawford. I am curious if there is any knowledge if it is the same Crawford family, or just coincidence?

BTW the other John listed as son to Rev James Anderson, looks like it is wrong. The location of Stafford county VA seems to be consistent (as do naming patterns) for this version of that John Anderson's ancestry: https://homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/va/trees/david.html (person no. 6)

Although, that is not confirmed, and certainly remains an open question. It seems a likely possibility that these two families are related

It makes the case that John Married to Ann Irwin is the correct son to James and Sodt (as the text in this profile lays out). Though it doesn't rise to a level of proof, it is compelling and possibly accurate.

Additional source: The Rev. James Anderson's son John (and his other children), born 13 Jan 1724/25, is found in the source "pg. 23, An Authentic History of Donegal Presbyterian Church by J.L. Ziegler, Published by E. McManus Jr. & Co., Philadelphia 1902" which notes "The list of the Rev. James Anderson's children is from a mutilated leaf of his family Bible."
