Biography

James (Andrews) Clarke was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

James Andrews' native place was London, England.[1]

James Andrews was indicted on 8 February 1797 for being found at large before the expiration of a 7 year sentence. He had escaped from the hulks. At his trial on 26 April 1797, Constable Richard Tilcock told the court that he found James in a public house called the White Lion, located in Poppins-court, Fleet-street. He told Tilcock he was a shoemaker who lived on Saffron-hill. James had previously been convicted at Chelmsford, Essex,on 13 March 1795, for stealing a watch from Mr. Abraham Hancock, a butcher, of Bow-bridge. Now 19 years of age, he was sentenced to death. On 17 Jun 1797 this was commuted to a life sentence.[2]

James Andrews was convicted at London Gaol Delivery on 26 April 1797, sentenced for life, and transported in the ship Hilsborough on October 1798, arriving at Sydney, New South Wales on 26 July 1799.[3][4]

He was married on 9 September 1807 at age 29 in St Philip's Parish, Sydney as James Clark.[5]

James Andrews, shoemaker, was granted an absolute pardon on 31 January 1814.[6]

He had a court appearance in Sydney on 25 Feb 1822, where as an overseer of Windsor road gang, he was reconfined for letting out his men and other fraudulent acts. The result was transportation to Port Macquarie for 7 years. This transportation was on 25 Mar 1822 on ship "Sally", with his wife and 2 children. Between 1824 and 1829 James Andrews was a convict who participated in building of St Thomas church in Port Macquarie. Noted are the hardships he and his young family endured at the hands of the corrupt Captain Crotty. He lived as John Andrews on the 1828 census for Port Macquarie. His death recorded as James Clarke at age 51 in 1829.

Research Notes

NOTE: This Andrews stream is not related to the families of the Hastings River and Manning River districts in NSW.

This person was attached as being the son of William Andrews and his wife Susannah of Horton in Dorset. Susannah died in 1774, 4 years before this James is said to have been born. William then remarried, to Mary Dove, and went on to have a son named James in 1781, who died in Horton in 1834. The relationship with this family of Andrews in Dorset has been removed.
