Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch James Annas was born Sep 12, 1827 in York Hills, Oneida, NY, and died Feb 9, 1885 in DePere, Brown, WI. He married Esther Ann Loper Sep 16, 1855 in Omro, Fond du Lac, WI.
James left his father's home when he was 20 years old. He attended Yale University, and removed to Wisconsin to teach school at Omro. In order to secure the teaching job he was required to interpret a scripture reading.
As a father of three, on August 26, 1864 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Chicago, IL He was a Landsman on the U.S.S. General Pillow and five months after his enlistment he was injured during a work detail.
He later turned to cabinet making, which he had learned from his father in New York, and removed to DePere, Wisconsin in 1873. He could read music, and played the flute, as well as holding the position of Choir Director at the West DePere Methodist Church for many years.
He died as a result of a railroad accident on the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad about one mile north of DePere, Wisconsin. He had been riding in the caboose when the train was rear-ended by a snowplow train coming from Frost Junction.
