Reid was born in Springfield in 1924 and was with his parents there in 1930 and 1940. He served as a torpedoman's mate in the South Pacific during World War II. He earned a degree in industrial design at the University of Illinois and worked in that field in Toledo (Lucas County), Ohio, where he lived from 1949 till at least 1994. He married Marilyn J. Haley of Toledo. They had four children. After 1994 they lived in Ottawa Hills (Lucas County) and finally Montgomery (Hamilton County), Ohio . He died in Cincinnati in 2005 and was buried in Joy Cemetery, Ottawa Hills.
