Biography

Eugene Francis (Frank) Apperley was born 9 August 1872 in Alliston, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada,[1] the son of Thomas Apperley and Sarah White. In 1882 the family moved to a homestead near Whitewood, Saskatchewan.

Eugene married Mary Ellen Tomlinson 4 March 1896 at Alexander, Manitoba.[2][3]

Eugene homesteaded on the northwest quarter of Section 36, Township 16, Range 2, west of the third meridian, near Mortlach, Saskatchewan in 1905.[4]

Eugene and Mary Ellen Apperley had six children:

  1. Thomas Raymond born 1904,
  2. Frederick Hatton born 1907,
  3. Harry Alva born 1910,
  4. Sarah Gladys born 1913,
  5. Esther Mary born 1915, and
  6. Francis Clegg born 1917

Also farming near Mortlach were Frank Scribner and his wife, Teressa (Morrow) Clark.

At the age of 43, Eugene enlisted in the 203rd Battalion Over-Seas Unit March 30, 1916. On July 10, 1917 Eugene was transfered to Staff and then was discharged at Winnipeg, Manitoba September 6, 1918 as medically unfit, a Private from the 10th Battalion, Canadian Garrision Regiment, earning no medals. Eugene suffered from severe leg pains and cramp which would strain from long exposure to standing. The cramping of the legs once over would leave his legs "so sore he [could not] stand the trousers to touch it".He never made it out of training to see any action.[1]

Eugene abandoned his wife and children[5] and hooked up with Mary Ellen (Clark) Dugan (daughter of the previously mentioned Teressa (Morrow) Clark), who had been abandoned in Winnipeg by her husband. Eugene, Mary Ellen, and her five children moved to Prongua, Saskatchewan, where Eugene was employed as a grain buyer for the Atlas Elevator Company. Two children were born to Eugene and Mary Ellen while they lived at Prongua: Atlas Ella born 1921and Victor Clark born 1925. The family, consisting of Eugene, Mary Ellen, their two children, and Mary Ellen's children by her previous marriage, moved to Barnes Crossing, Saskatchewan, where they resided until Mary Ellen's death in 1941.

Eugene Francis Apperley died 2 October 1944 at North Battleford, Saskatchewan[6] and is buried at Prongua, Saskatchewan.
