Ronald Henry Appleby was born on 23rd June 1913 in Hamilton, New South Wales, Australia. He was the eldest son of Frank Appleby and Amy Procter. [1]
On 15th August 1941 in Sydney, and with the Second World War approaching ominously towards Australia, Ronald enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was then single as he listed his father as next-of-kin. [2] He was demobilised on 15 Mar 1946, his final posting being to No.2 Aircraft Depot as a Leading Aircraftman. [2]
On 7th March 1943, he was aboard RAAF aeroplane De Havilland DH-84A Type 2 Dragon (A34-24) when it crashed in the rugged mountains and thick rainforest near Freshwater Gorge, west of Cairns, North Queensland. Ronald and Lieutenant Colonel Philip Cardale survived, found days later wandering in the jungle with serious injuries. Brigadier John Crawford DSO, Sergeant Lindsay McColl and Lieutenant Arthur Morris were killed in the crash. [3]
Ronald married Nessie Hutton in 1950 in New Lambton, New South Wales. [4]
Aged 96 years, he passed away on 20th February 2010 in Newcastle and his ashes placed in Newcastle Memorial Park. [5]
