Josias (or Josiah) Appleton was born on 13 Sep 1839, and christened on 6 Oct 1839 at Newton Chapel in the parish of Winwick, Lancashire. He was the son of William Appleton and Ellen (Anders) Appleton. His father's occupation was recorded as taylor, and the family's address as Newton.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Liverpool Street, Eccleston in Prescot, Lancashire with Josias' paternal grandfather John, a tailor. Three young tailors were living with them as well - Charles McMeal, William Ambletin and James Anken. No occupation was listed for Josias' father.

The grandfather died in 1842, and was buried on 30 May 1842 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire.
By March 30th 1851, they were living in Eccleston, St Helens, Lancashire; Josias' father was a tailor.

By April 7th 1861, they were living in Appleton Street, St Helens; Josias' father was a builder, Josias was a bookkeeper.
