Biography

Grace (Apter) Fitch was born in Accrington, Lancashire, England.

Grace was a Nurse.

Grace Ethel Apter (1883-1973) was born on the 19th April 1883 ^[1] in Accrington, Lancashire ^[2] whilst her father was a curate at nearby Church Kirk. The family had lived in Denton Lancashire not long before she was born and subsequently moved to Denton, in County Durham confusingly. She was the daughter of the Reverend William Apter and Amelia Hatch ^[2] and was christened on the 11th May 1883 at St James' church in Church Kirk, Lancashire. ^[1]

The following year they moved to Denton near Darlington and the family lived there for many years. ^{[3] [4]}

Grace (Apter) Fitch migrated from England to Canada.

In 1908 Grace emigrated to Canada leaving England via Liverpool aboard the VIrginian on the 24th April 1908 ^[5] arriving in Montreal on the 2nd May. ^[6]

She made her way to Toronto where she became a nurse. In 1910 she was living at Riverdale Hospital, Toronto as recorded on her younger brother's travel documents. ^[7]

She became a nursing sister ^[8] and served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War 1 serving in France. ^[9]

She was demobilised in England after the war spending some time with family before travelling to New York aboard the "Adriatic" from Southampton on the 8th October 1919 then onto Canada. ^[10]

She made her way to Vancouver where she was a registered nurse living on Cardero Street. There she married Ralph Edmondstone Fitch at St George's church on the 26th January 1925. ^{[11] [12] [13]}

They lived in Vancouver for the next 30 years living on Cornwall Street during WW2 ^{[14] [15]} before moving to Cotton Drive. ^{[16] [17]}

Ralph died in 1958 and Grace subsequently retired to the suburb of Burnaby living on Patterson Avenue there ^[18]

She died in Burnaby on the 18th April 1973 ^{[19] [20]} and was cremated in Vancouver on the 23rd April 1973. ^{[21] [22]}
